Downpipes and rainwater
Downpipes need to manage both the volume and flow of rainwater to ensure safe drainage. Well-functioning downpipes protect your property and your neighbours' from water damage. Poor rainwater management can cause serious problems including flooding and structural damage.
Downpipes direct rainwater from your roof into the stormwater drainage system. They should never be connected to household wastewater drains from areas like the kitchen, laundry, or toilets to avoid contamination and plumbing problems.
A downpipe works hand in hand with your guttering. The gutters collect the water running off the roof and the downpipes carry it safely down the wall and away from the building. If the pipe is undersized, blocked or poorly positioned, water backs up, overflows and ends up soaking the brickwork and the ground around the foundations. That is where lasting damage starts.
What our downpipe work involves
We repair, realign and replace downpipes on homes and commercial buildings of every age. We supply and fit UPVC downpipes in round and square profiles, available in black, white, brown and grey, along with cast iron and aluminium where a traditional look is needed on period or listed properties. We also fit hopper heads, shoes, offsets and rainwater outlets so the whole run is properly engineered rather than simply patched.
Every job starts with a look at how the rainwater is moving across the whole roof. We check that downpipes are correctly sized for the roof area, securely clipped to the wall, and discharging into a working gully or soakaway rather than just splashing onto a path. Where a pipe is split, leaking at a joint or hanging loose, we put it right. Where the existing layout simply cannot cope, we redesign it so the water always has somewhere to go.
Signs your downpipes need attention
Common signs of a downpipe problem include water gushing from a joint partway down the pipe, a green algae stain running down the wall behind it, a constant damp patch at the base of the wall, and pooling water around the foundations after rain. Loose or rattling pipes and pipes that have come away from the wall also need attention. Left unchecked, this kind of water ingress is a leading cause of damp and can undermine the structure over time.
